Hello, 2021. How are you? You started out a little wild, but we still in here and we gon’ be alright!
Season 3 of Firsts Over Forty kicks off with a conversation between my BFF Robin and me. I invited her on to talk about how important friendships are in general, and how ours has weathered 26 years in particular.
During this socially distant time, a lot of people have been struggling with connection, love, empathy, and the need for closeness during a time of deep vulnerability. For me, the true friendships that I have developed and that have sustained me function as a respite or sanctuary. I feel safe. I feel I can trust my close friends and that they hold me up during good times and especially during rough times.
Sometimes, you have to create the family you want and that’s who my friends are. The family who chooses to love and cherish me. No jealousy. No competition. No throwing drinks. Or shade. The cousins, aunties, sisters, and brothers I always wanted to have.
And while my BFF relationship is 26 years strong, I do believe in making new friends. The first lesson I learned from my Girl Scouting days:
“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, and the other’s gold.”
So tune in to hear two girlfriends chat about what they’ve discovered about the true magic of friendship over forty is and how beautiful a friendship between two women can authentically be.
