When I shared with friends that I was traveling to Anguilla for Memorial Day weekend, most nodded their heads and said, “Oh, cool,” but I could tell behind the nod they had no idea where it neither was nor had ever heard of it. Someone even asked, “Is that in Africa?” No, not exactly. It’s an island in the Caribbean, less known to travelers than the Bahamas or Jamaica but truly a gem of the island region. Tucked around Saint Martin, Saint Thomas and Saint Kitts, Anguilla has the private island feel most often associated with celebrity status but the relaxing, rejuvenating, tranquil atmosphere sought after by those wishing to escape the daily grind. Beauty beyond measure, this island has the clearest blue water I’ve ever seen with 33 beaches that stretch out miles on end. One of the island’s beaches, Shoal Bay, has been ranked by several top authorities on travel as one of the best beaches in the world. This designation, however, has not made the 13,000-people island over-crowed or over-commercialized. It’s a great location for unforgettable destination weddings, honeymoons and truly restorative holidays.

The cuisine rivals any around the world with restaurants such as Oliver’s and Davida’s. Anguilla has a couple of big properties such as the uber-sexy Viceroy, and The CuisinArt , however, my recommendation would be to stay at a more intimate place such as the villa property Ultimacy Villa. Ultimacy is near Shoal Bay beach and has bar-none the best view of a sunset on this planet. Also, the view of the clear blue water from the Villas’ perch will take your breath away. The property comes fully staffed with an outstanding Chef, Butler, Food and Beverage Hosts, Housekeeping and Security. The pool is also a lounger’s paradise.

Anguilla also has must-see art galleries such as the Devonish Gallery to pick up art from local creatives including paintings and woodwork. Visitors can also learn about the great work being done by the Anguilla Tennis Academy and its founder to inspire the island’s youth to engage in tennis.

Anguilla definitely gives you the sense that you are on your own private island, secluded from life’s trials and tribulations. Once you visit, you will want to return again and again to this peerless paradise. And like some celebrities such as BET’s Robert Johnson, you may end up taking residence there. So discover a new place in the Caribbean and fall under Anguilla’s spell – you will not be disappointed.
